Marcia Elizabeth [Swengel]
Powell was born in 1943 in Urbana, Illinois, and grew up in the
country in a remodeled schoolhouse (which she helped remodel).
Her father, Mac Swengel, taught school, farmed, remodeled the
schoolhouse, wrote plays for world disarmament, founded and
directed a community orchestra, got a PhD at age 50 and has written
books on education reform.
Marcia started playing piano at age 5, violin at age 9, and oboe at
age 11. She won a scholarship to the University of Illinois where
she received two degrees and graduated with honors.
She taught music at Uni High in Urbana for two years and then moved
to San Diego where she taught music at a junior high school while
performing with an avant garde choral group.
For eight years she worked for her church. She founded and directed
the church choir for 25 years. For seven years she was a legal
secretary in downtown Los Angeles.
She met and married Stephen Powell with whom she had a daughter,
Ashley.
In 1988 she founded The Affinity Exchange dating service, which she
continues to run to this day.
Like her father, Marcia always had broad interests and a strong
analytical mind. To this day she reads at stop lights and in grocery
store lines. Her studies in applied philosophy furthered her ability
to confront reality and postulate and carry out solutions.
Her twenty years as a matchmaker, working to help her clients, and
studying and evaluating the data she observed led to the writing of
the booklet “Message from Marcia” and this accompanying website.
(Note: For the record, Marcia's professional photo was taken
in 2001.) |
